On 9 February 2024, several members of the U3AM Reading for Pleasure book group farewelled
Margaret Murphy, who began the group in 1998.
Margaret was an amazing 90-year-old, when she suddenly left us for whatever comes next. At her
funeral, we heard her family confirm what we knew Margaret to be: above all, she was a mum to her
three lovely children.
Our memories of Margaret at U3AM are many, but we recall that she was extraordinarily in love with
words, poetry and literature and had an amazing recall of what she’d read. Her kindness and quiet
dignity have lifted us all to be better people. Her intellect and readiness to listen to others surely
taught us to treasure such values. Margaret was a gracious and dignified member of U3A
Manningham. Vale dear Margaret.
