Migrant English Tutors – Assembling the Resource Manual

10 of us turned up at The Pines on a cold wintry morning on 26 June 2024 at 9:30AM to help assemble the Resource Manual that will be used in the 2024 training course for new Migrant English Tutors, commencing in the first week of Term 3.

Our U3A Manningham Office Manager, Robyn, came to do the photocopying. Hon Meng (being the other half of the Coordinator) was also conscripted to lend a helping hand.

The Resource Manual is organised into sections, with each section supporting one of the 6 training sessions, with its own objectives and agenda. The training covers the following aspects:

  • Overview of the U3A Manningham Migrant English Tutor Program
  • The role and responsibilities of the Migrant English Tutor
  • Cultural awareness, re-settlement issues and intercultural communication
  • Principles of adult learning and factors affecting the learning of a second language
  • How to identify the English skill level and the needs of the learner
  • Planning tutoring sessions incorporating effective tutoring strategies
  • Using technology, teaching aids and internet resources for tutoring sessions

The Resource Manual also contains a variety of material that can be used to prepare for a tutoring session with a learner. It lists useful websites, resources for teaching vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, and introduces the use of movies, songs and podcasts for the learning of English.
