On Wednesday 27 January, 28 tutors participated in the first of our two annual Migrant English Tutor meetings. The meetings blend professional learning with the chance to reconnect, share experiences, and enjoy each other’s company.

This session focused on the joys of tutoring, the challenges tutors face and the practical strategies that help overcome them. Patricia Liew opened the conversation with a short presentation that led to thoughtful and lively small group discussions.

Common themes around learners’ confidence with English

Across all groups, several common themes emerged. Tutors spoke about the joy of watching learners grow in confidence as their English skills develop – confidence that enables them to participate more fully in the community. From joining conversations with English speakers to shopping independently, navigating public transport, visiting the doctor, and managing everyday tasks – English language skills are key to successful integration.

Personal benefits for tutors

Many tutors also reflected on the personal benefits of their role. They shared how tutoring has broadened their understanding of other cultures and countries. Some tutors have formed lasting friendships with their learners after the formal tutoring relationship has ended.
