At U3A Manningham we have a number of unsung heroes who work behind the scenes to help us function orderly and efficiently. Sheldon Lipschitz is one of these members.

Who is Sheldon Lipschitz?

Proud grandfather of three, Sheldon is a quietly spoken local man who has been a member since 2014. Following his retirement as a financial controller, he became actively involved in community activities. At the Probus Club of Lower Templestowe Valley, Sheldon has held various roles including president and treasurer. He plays pennant at the Donvale Bowls Club and finds time to enjoy fly fishing and bridge. He is also a member of the U3AM art class of which his wife Riesa is a tutor.

Our showcases

The display cabinets in our hallway at The Pines showcase the creative talents of our members. In 2015, as popularity grew, the one cabinet display became two cabinets and display duration has now increased from two weeks to three.

Sheldon manages the roster for these much-loved showcases to ensure there are interesting displays all year round. He encourages tutors to book the showcases to display their pupils’ efforts, thus encouraging members to join classes that possibly they had never considered.

Sheldon claims that the displays reward both the tutor and pupils alike.

Coordinating the displays

Sheldon puts a great deal of effort into preparing the display roster. He says it is like doing a giant jigsaw. All tutors are contacted and asked for their preferred time, followed by reminders. Once finalised, the timetable is sent out to tutors at the end of the year for the following year. Such organisation and effort are essential to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Silent achievers

U3A Manningham gratefully acknowledges those who work silently in the background, recognising that they are the foundation of everything we achieve. Sheldon’s work does not go unnoticed, and we thank him for his valued time and energy.
