U3A Manningham brought the spirit of Flemington to our members with a lively Oaks Day celebration in the Pines Function Room (PFR). Event organiser Graeme Mills welcomed members, who were dressed to impress and ready to party. The PFR was filled to capacity and buzzed with laughter, music, singing, dancing and vibrant conversation.
Graeme opened the event with a solo rendition of Maurice Chevalier’s ‘Thank Heaven for Little Girls’. A highlight of the afternoon was a mock running of the Oaks Day Cup, with Committee members as jockeys. The member who drew the winning horse received a prize hamper.
A series of fun competitions added to the excitement: Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Man, Best Dressed Couple, Best Lady’s Hat or Fascinator, Most Outrageous Outfit, and Best Dressed Table. All trophies were handcrafted by Graeme.
Entertainment included dancing and group singing led by Mavis Blake and her choir, accompanied by Christina Boyd on piano.
Special thanks to Events and Catering Manager Maureen Bowman and her team for transforming the PFR into a festive venue and for providing the bubbly, delicious sandwiches and cakes.
Our U3A recognises the importance of social connection in keeping our members active, happy and healthy. The photos below show that Oaks Day at U3AM achieved this goal. As one member so aptly said: ‘It was a fun day of camaraderie and friendship.’
