A symbol of peace and belonging

A new public artwork by award-winning artist Julian Clavijo has been installed at Ruffey Lake Park. On the final day of Term 1, members of the Thursday walking group had the pleasure of hearing from Zak Fakhri about the inspiration behind this meaningful sculpture. Zak, a member of the walking group, played a key role in bringing the project to life.

Zak’s background

Growing up in Bangladesh, Zak witnessed the devastating effects of civil war. These early experiences shaped his lifelong commitment to promoting peace. After migrating to Australia, he carried with him the hopes and dreams shared by many who now proudly call this country home. About 7 years ago, Zak envisioned the creation of a ‘park for peace.’ Working with Dilnaz Billimoria, a fellow member of the Manningham Multicultural Network, he gathered support from various organisations and presented the idea to Manningham Council. U3A Manningham was an early supporter of this initiative. The proposal was accepted and, after several rounds of community consultation, the Migrant Peace Park with its beautiful sculpture was officially opened on 14 March 2026.

About the sculpture

The sculpture, titled Journey of Hope, takes the form of a triangular pyramid that represents peace, belonging and renewal. Each side features a child with a symbolic offering, and the interlocking jigsaw pattern represents the way our community connects and supports one another. It reflects the stories of all Manningham residents and reminds us that our diversity is a source of strength, and that peace is something to cherish and protect.

Where is it?

You can find the Migrant Peace Park and Journey of Hope sculpture in the north-east section of Ruffey Lake Park, near the corner of Cricklewood Drive and Victoria Street. Next time you’re visiting the park, take a moment to sit, admire the artwork, and appreciate the rich diversity of our Manningham community.
